New technologies are confusing to many of us. What we do know is that our current and potential tenants are demanding more and more from the properties where they choose to live.

The right upgrades can breathe life into a residential property — like the fiber-optic network that Clifton, N.J.-based Value Companies installed in its portfolio of mainly 1960s- and ’70s-vintage properties. Jack Linefsky, director of operations at Value Companies, told Multifamily Executive Magazine, “Now we are able to give our residents 21st-century technology in a well-located, well-maintained building, even though our portfolio is older.” Today’s renters and condo buyers expect a reliable fiber-optic network or other high-bandwidth alternatives they can link to from home. Increasingly, they’re choosing to live where they can access such resources.
